NEW LIFE COMMUNITY CHURCH
Outreach Committee

Meeting Minutes, 19 April, 2010

The regular meeting of the New Life Community Church Outreach Committee, took place at New Life Community Church, 2680 Huntingdon Pike, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006, on Monday, 19 April, 2010.
Present were Pastor Bill Covelens (Chairman), Luke Davis (Secretary), and Diane Koerper.

The meeting was called to order at 7:19 PM, with an opening prayer by Pastor Bill.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. The church's landscaping was discussed as follows:

  1. Update on tree removal: Mike Adams has cut the trees, and all that remains is for the wood chips from the stumps to be removed.
  2. Scott and Diane want to plant some kind of shrubbery or similar in the locations next to the North wing doors, where the old bushes have been removed.
  3. Scott is going to do some painting, covering, and replacement of some of the posts and other landscape fixtures in the same area.
  4. Diane suggested rhododendrons to replace the bushes that had been removed.
  5. Pastor Bill asked Diane to work with Scott to guide the landscape changes which would be taking place near the doors of the north wing and gradually throughout the rest of the property. Not much money is currently available, so changes will have to be incremental.

3. A brief discussion was held about the lighting in the sanctuary, the general opinion being that if the colonial fixtures could be replaced with something more modern, it would improve the contemporary "feel" of the sanctuary greatly. It was also decided that nothing would or could be done along these lines currently.

4. The Elders' request that we setup a community bulletin board was discussed again. It was decided that Diane would buy a board to match the one on the other side of the north wing doors, to be used for this purpose.

[SECRETARY'S NOTE: it was decided a few weeks after the meeting, to attempt a trial run using the existing board, before buying another one.]

5. Update on business card & other invitationals:

6. Update on re-decoration of the Sanctuary:

  1. Luke reported that the Deacons had approved Outreach taking charge of the project, including the collection of price quotes and making of recommendations.
  2. Diane said that she had taken measurements, and looked at materials. She said that there was a curtain supplier on Street Road which she wanted to visit.
  3. Luke said that he had checked into the design software discussed at the previous meeting, and while it may be able to do what is needed, the company which owns it does not now how to make it do so.
  4. Diane suggested dieing the curtain at the back of the stage, rather than replacing it. She will need to determine the type of material, and Luke suggested that if she asks anyone to perform a free initial consult on the design, that she ask them to assess the material. Pastor Bill suggested asking Dorothy Bridger if she knows.

NEW BUSINESS:

7. A discussion was held about the church's new Facebook page.
Luke explained some of the reasons why the church should have such a page, and its capabilities for disseminating information.

He said that Facebook gave the church the option to make a short web address to be used for linking to the page, such as facebook.com/newlifehv (to complement our web address of newlifehv.org), or something else, possibly shorter.
He added that while "facebook.com/newlife" might be a good option, it was already in use by some individual, although there was some possibility of getting it from her if the committee really wanted it.
Diane said she would prefer to use "newlifecc" rather than "newlifehv".

ACTION: After visiting the facebook.com/newlife page, it was decided that Luke would contact the woman currently using it, and ask if she would be willing to let it be taken over by the church.

8. Luke presented an idea for trying to attract community events to the church grounds to create community awareness and "buzz" about the location. Specifically, the idea of hosting blood drives was discussed, along with general ideas for financial, marriage, and health related events.
ACTIONS: Luke should discuss it with the Deacons and get permission, and then try contacting the Red Cross, etc..

9. Bill Rumpf expressed concern that the pictures which Chelsea Koerper took of the church might become damaged, if not hung soon.
It was decided to hang them on the north wall of the narthex, and Luke was asked to arrange that with the Deacons.

The meeting adjourned with prayer by Luke.
